Registration Policy and Guidelines

Only one registration form should be submitted per team. For the 2017 tournament, only the first 50 teams who register will be guaranteed spaces in the competition. Teams that register after the 50 spots have been filled will be placed on a waiting list. If a space opens up, teams will be immediately informed based on their spot on the waiting list. Regular registration deadline is Feburary 24th, 2017. Late registration deadline is March 10, 2017. There will be a late registration fee of an extra $15.

How many teams can register?

Each high school may send one team of students enrolled in grades 9-12. Schools with 1500+ students may send a maximum of two teams. Multiple teams from the same high school will each need to bring separate adult sponsors. If this would not be possible for your school, please send us an e-mail.

Who can be on my team?

Most teams participating will be composed of students from the same high school. However, students enrolled at different schools in the same state may also create a team. Homeschooled students are welcome, as long as they are from grades 9-12.

Can students who are not part of a team compete?

Due to space restrictions, we will not allow incomplete teams to register. In future years, we may allow for such individuals to participate. A team must consist of 6 students.

When do teams need to have their rosters finalized?

Teams do not need rosters to be finalized upon registration. Coaches will be able to add/change competing students until March 10, 2017.

How much does it cost to attend?

The registration fee is $60 per team. For teams that register late, there will be an extra $15 late registration fee included for a total of $75. Payments should not be made until your team has been approved by us via email. We will not be able to provide reimbursements for travel or lodging costs, but we will provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks on the day of the competition. Please contact us for need-based financial assistance.

How do I pay?

After you have received an email confirmation for attending WUCT, you may pay with cash or check (payable to “Washington University in St. Louis Chemistry Tournament”) mailed to:

All checks must be postmarked by Feb 24, 2017. Late registration checks must be postmarked by March 10, 2017.

If a registered team does not pay before the deadline, we may replace the non-paying team with a team on the waitlist. If a team pays its fees and then must withdraw, we will give a full refund, so long as we are notified of the withdrawal by March 13, 2016. We will not offer refunds to teams that withdraw after that date. DO NOT pay until you have received confirmation that your team will be attending WUCT.

Do teams need to be accompanied by adults?

Yes, a full team will consist of six student and one adult coach. The adult coach can either be a teacher or parent but should preferably a teacher as we will be hosting faculty-led workshops on competition day to discuss effective strategies and resources with high school teachers that focus on establishing critical thinking and collaboration in their own classrooms. Teams without any adult coach will be ineligible for the tournament.
